Do you know how to choose beef that actually supports your gut health—and your family’s well-being? According to autoimmune disease research, autoimmune conditions now affect more people than cancer and heart disease combined. And one of the biggest contributors? The food we eat—especially conventionally raised meat. Let’s take a closer look at how this ties into our gut microbiome and the link between conventional meat and autoimmune issues.

It’s no secret that antibiotics are widely used in conventional livestock. But how does that affect you? Antibiotics contribute to antibiotic resistance in humans, allowing harmful bacteria to thrive in the gut. These pathogens can overpower beneficial microbes, survive stomach acid, and disrupt digestive balance. The result? Gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, brain fog, fatigue, low immunity, mood swings, and long-term conditions like leaky gut, IBS, and IBD.

As harmful bacteria take over, digestion weakens, toxins accumulate, and those toxins can travel through the body—especially burdening the liver. Your liver is your main detox organ and is responsible for hundreds of critical functions. When it's overwhelmed, everything from energy to immunity can suffer.

So what can you do? Purchase pasture raised beef from your supermarket. Stores like Wegmans or Whole Foods are more likely to carry it. If not, support your health by sourcing meat from local farms that raise animals on pasture, treat them humanely, and minimize stress. Here is what makes pasture raised better meat:

  • The cow lived outdoors on pasture, able to graze naturally.

  • Focuses more on the living conditions and animal welfare.

  • The animal might still be fed supplemental grain, depending on the farm—so it’s best to ask if it’s 100% grass-fed and finished and pasture-raised for the highest quality.

  • Access to fresh air, sun, and natural grazing (low stress = healthier meat)

  • No feedlot confinement

  • Better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio

  • Lower risk of antibiotic or hormone exposure.

There are also excellent online options for having pasture-raised beef delivered right to your door. It’s a simple switch that can make a big difference in your family’s long-term health.
